FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In response to Academy President Tom Sherak’s letter informing him that the Board of Governors had voted him an Honorary Oscar, Jean-Luc Godard has sent a cordial, hand-written note back to Sherak. In it, Godard graciously thanked the organization for the honor and referred to himself as “the fourth musketeer,” in acknowledgement of the fact that three others (Kevin Brownlow, Francis Ford Coppola and Eli Wallach) are among the year’s honorees. His note, relayed to the Academy late last week via an assistant to Godard, indicated that, schedule permitting, he would come to Los Angeles for the November 13 Governors Awards event.

September 7, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beverly Hills, CA – “Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies,” an exhibition that delves into the career and personal life of the legendary Swedish director, will have its world premiere at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday, September 16. Organized by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen, Berlin, in association with the Academy, the exhibition, which is open to the public, will run through December 12. Admission is free.

In preparation for the first major exhibition since the director’s death in 2007, the Bergman Foundation in Stockholm has granted unprecedented access to Bergman’s personal papers, allowing for an in-depth examination of his life and vast creative output.

“Truth and Lies” will provide unique insights into Bergman’s film, theater work and personal life, with sections devoted to his early creative efforts, his ascent as an artist and his struggles with faith. The exhibition’s film projections and specially created montages will allow the visitor to delve into the full range of his work, from his earliest films to his major international successes. Original scripts, notebooks, film schedules, sketches, posters, photographs and other paper materials will be accompanied by items such as set models and costumes.

Bergman received nine Oscar® nominations for writing, directing or producing, and was presented with the Academy’s Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1970. Three of his films won Oscars® for Best Foreign Language Film (“The Virgin Spring,” “Through a Glass Darkly” and “Fanny & Alexander”).

Exhibtion items are on loan from the Swedish Film Institute, the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Swedish Television, the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library and several of Bergman’s friends and creative collaborators.

After its run in Los Angeles, the exhibition will travel to the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin as part of the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival’s celebration of Bergman’s work.

In conjunction with “Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies,” the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Film Department and the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles are each presenting special film screening series. LACMA’s series, “Cries and Whispers: The Psychological Cinema of Ingmar Bergman,” will feature such films as “The Seventh Seal” (1957), “Fanny & Alexander” (1982), and “The Touch” (1971), which will be followed by a conversation with its star Elliott Gould. The Goethe-Institut’s “Bergman and Germany” will highlight Bergman’s life and career in Germany with such titles as “Scenes from a Marriage” (1974) and “From the Life of the Marionettes” (1980).

For tickets to LACMA screenings, visit http://www.lacma.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has awarded a $50,000 grant to underwrite the 2010 Telluride Film Festival’s Guest Director program, this year featuring novelist and screenwriter of “The English Patient,” Michael Ondaatje.

This is the third consecutive year that the Academy has funded the program. In 2008 the festival’s guest director was Slavoj Zizek, the Slovenian political philosopher and cultural critic; in 2009, it was Alexander Payne, the director and Oscar®-winning screenwriter of “Sideways.”

For more than two decades, Telluride has welcomed numerous prominent filmmakers and personalities to help select and present each year’s films. Previous guest directors include Academy Award®-nominated writer-director Peter Bogdanovich, director Jean-Pierre Gorin, film curator and archivist Edith Kramer, Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris, author Salman Rushdie, Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier.

The Academy Foundation – the Academy’s cultural and educational wing – annually distributes more than $1 million to film scholars, cultural organizations and film festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Foundation also presents the Academy’s rich assortment of screenings and other public programs each year.

September 1, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present an encore screening of “The Maltese Falcon,” the 1941 Best Picture nominee that kicked off the Academy’s “Oscar® Noir: 1940s Writing Nominees from Hollywood’s Dark Side” series, on Monday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

“Oscar Noir” was a summer-long festival of 15 film noir classics from the 1940s, all of which were nominated in writing categories. Contemporary screenwriters, including Lawrence Kasdan, Scott Frank, Callie Khouri and Phil Alden Robinson, introduced the films; “The Maltese Falcon” was one of several in the series that played to a sold-out crowd.

The third film version of Dashiell Hammett’s novel became iconic in the hands of writer-director John Huston, with Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre creating indelible portraits of film noir characters. “The Maltese Falcon” earned three Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture (Warner Bros.), Actor in a Supporting Role (Greenstreet) and Writing – Screenplay (Huston).

At 7 p.m. recap highlights featuring the 15 screenwriters who introduced films in the “Oscar Noir” series and the 1948 comedy short “So You Want to Be a Detective,” starring George O’Hanlon as Joe McDrakes, will be screened as part of the evening’s pre-feature program.

The screening will be open to all “Oscar Noir” series passholders, and a limited number of individual tickets will also be available beginning September 1. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. They may be purchased online at www.oscars.org, by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
August 25, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beverly Hills, CA — The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted last night to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer-director Francis Ford Coppola and Honorary Awards to historian and preservationist Kevin Brownlow, director Jean-Luc Godard and actor Eli Wallach. All four awards will be presented at the Academy’s 2nd Annual Governors Awards dinner on Saturday, November 13, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.

“Each of these honorees has touched movie audiences worldwide and influenced the motion picture industry through their work,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “It will be an honor to celebrate their extraordinary achievements and contributions at the Governors Awards.”

Brownlow is widely regarded as the preeminent historian of the silent film era as well as a preservationist. Among his many silent film restoration projects are Abel Gance’s 1927 epic “Napoleon,” Rex Ingram’s “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” (1921) and “The Thief of Baghdad” (1924), starring Douglas Fairbanks. Brownlow has authored, among others, The Parade’s Gone By; The War, the West, and the Wilderness; Hollywood: The Pioneers; Behind the Mask of Innocence; David Lean; and Mary Pickford Rediscovered. His documentaries include “Hollywood,” “Unknown Chaplin,” “Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow,” “Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius” and “D.W. Griffith: Father of Film,” all with David Gill; Brownlow also directed “Cecil B. DeMille: American Epic” and “Garbo,” the latter with Christopher Bird.

Coppola began his film career in the early 1960s making low-budget films with 2009 Honorary Award recipient Roger Corman. By the end of the 1970s he had won five Oscars®: Best Picture (“The Godfather Part II”); Directing (“The Godfather Part II”) and Writing (“Patton,” “The Godfather,” “The Godfather Part II”). Among his numerous producing credits are “American Graffiti, “Gardens of Stone,” “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” “Jack” and “Tetro.” In 1969 he established American Zoetrope, an independent film studio that helped launch the careers of George Lucas and Carroll Ballard, and has since produced more than 30 films, including “The Black Stallion,” “The Outsiders,” “Lost in Translation” and “The Good Shepherd.”

A key figure in the French New Wave movement, Godard started out writing about cinema before beginning to make his own short films. His influential first feature, “Breathless” (1960), impressed audiences and filmmakers alike with its jazzy take on the American crime film. For fifty years, Godard has continued to write and direct challenging, and sometimes controversial, films that have established his reputation as one of the seminal modernists in the history of cinema. His more than 70 features include “Contempt,” “Alphaville,” “Weekend” and “King Lear.” Godard is also credited with having influenced numerous contemporary directors, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino.

Born in Brooklyn in 1915, Wallach made his debut film appearance in Elia Kazan’s 1956 feature “Baby Doll,” starring alongside Karl Malden and Carroll Baker. Since then he has starred in more than 50 features including “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Misfits,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “The Godfather, Part III” and “The Holiday.” Throughout his lengthy career, Wallach has worked with such directors and actors as Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Douglas, Clint Eastwood, John Ford, Clark Gable, John Huston, Sergio Leone, Marilyn Monroe, Al Pacino, Gregory Peck and Kate Winslet. Wallach will next be seen in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

The Honorary Award, an Oscar® statuette, is given to an individual for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”

The Thalberg Award, a bust of the motion picture executive, is given to “a creative producer whose body of work reflects a consistently high quality of motion picture production.”

The Governors Awards presentation will be produced for the Academy by producer Sid Ganis with Don Mischer Productions.
