FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 178 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy’s roster of members.

“These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks.”

The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April. Hetherington had been a 2010 nominee for his film “Restrepo,” but died prior to the Academy’s spring meetings to select new members. The Documentary Branch proposed that Hetherington’s name be included among the year’s invitees. The governors agreed.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the world’s preeminent movie-related organization, with a membership of more than 6,000 of the most accomplished men and women working in cinema. In addition to the annual Academy Awards – in which the members vote to select the nominees and winners – the Academy presents a diverse year-round slate of public programs, exhibitions and events; provides financial support to a wide range of other movie-related organizations and endeavors; acts as a neutral advocate in the advancement of motion picture technology; and, through its Margaret Herrick Library and Academy Film Archive, collects, preserves, restores and provides access to movies and items related to their history.
Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will premiere a new digital restoration of “Bye Bye Birdie” on Wednesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Hosted by film critic Stephen Farber, the evening will feature a Digital Cinema presentation with a newly restored 4-channel stereo soundtrack, followed by an onstage discussion with special guests Ann-Margret and Bobby Rydell.

Just five years after Elvis Presley was drafted into the army, the satirical “Bye Bye Birdie” had already been written, staged on Broadway, and turned into a film.

Pictured: Lobby card, BYE BYE BIRDIE, 1963.

When singing sensation Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) is drafted, songwriter Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke) and his girlfriend, Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh), arrange for Birdie to sing one of Peterson’s songs in a farewell performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” To heighten the drama, the rock ’n’ roll star is to give a goodbye kiss to a lucky young lady (Ann-Margret) from a small Ohio town – much to the dismay of her steady beau (Rydell) and parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche).
Directed by George Sidney, this vibrant adaptation of the successful Broadway musical comedy earned Oscar® nominations for both Music and Sound, and features a range of songs, from the youthful “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” to the parentally angled “Kids.”

This is a great American story and an excellent example of the kind of work The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is continuously engaged in, unbeknown to many people across the United States. Handing out pretty gold statues is only a small part of the Academy’s work; the tip of the iceberg!

The 4oth Infantry Division Band played as the Oscar was presented by Academy President Sid Ganis and Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis to US Army Brigadier General Jeffrey E. Phillips in a formal ceremony. The 11th Calvary Regiment Color Guard displayed their flags and rendered full military honors during the event.
